Richmond/Corea
Dannie Richmond and Chick Corea During a break between takes, the piano player was getting an impromptu drum lesson from Mingus’ long-term timekeeping cohort on one side of the room, while saxophonist Wallace and bassist Eddie Gomez conversed profoundly on the other. I worked both sides of the room, and, as much as I like the series of several shots of that other exchange in progress, those will, at least for now, remain unpublished, since this single image captures a moment complete unto itself. I still can’t look at all those curtains without thinking of Albrecht Dürer – not to flatter myself, but to be reminded how easy photography is compared to realistic painting.
